SkinDeeper primarily explores the sensitive issues surrounding my brother who has been a heroin addict for about 10 years.  He has attended rehabilitation clinics on three occasions.  Currently, he claims and appears to be clean, however, it is a constant worry that one day he may turn to heroin once again.

The photographs here aim to uncover some of the more subtle and hidden facets regarding the nature of his addiction and its affect on our family.  It does not offer a sensationalist or derogatory portrayal; neither does it offer immediate satisfaction for the viewer.  The work deals with notions of façade and pretence by aiming to evoke feelings of unease through depicting apparent ‘normality’.  The intention is to suggest that although things on the surface look normal; on a deeper level, things are not quite right.  It is a deeply buried and disguised problem.  The aim is to lift the veil, allowing a closer yet subtle look into this fragile life.
