Traces: – a mark, object or other indication of the existence or passing of something

In this project I have looked at how our bodies are changed by ordinary objects that we wear, use or have contact with in our daily lives. It is very obvious from some of these images that the objects can add to the wear and tear on our bodies. Once the object and the surface of the skin are separated we are left with a trace of the absent object. This trace is usually transient but I have captured a moment in time and made the trace a permanent object in the photograph.

None of the models used in the project were young, beautiful celebrities they are all ordinary people. All but one was over fifty and in terms of this society in which we live passed their prime. The surface of their skin shows the signs of ageing, a natural process for us all.

The philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein asks the question ‘Does what is ordinary always give the impression of ordinariness?’ Look at these images of ordinary bodies marked by ordinary objects and ponder on your response.
